Alright, it’s been a few days since the Palm Pre released, Apple has already announced their new Iphone specs… and the slew of opinions from all over has commenced.
I have listened to numerous Iphone converts (most of them people I associate on the web with regularly) knock the Pre and turn right around and complain about their Iphone upgrade charges announced yesterday. Personally, I don’t think the upgrade fees are worth what your gonna get A new user it is probably a good deal, a $99 dollar Iphone to be like everyone else, even better. Only problem with the whole thing… your locked into a 2 year contract and the rumor is the Iphone will be available on a different network before your contract is up.
One of the the biggest Iphone complaints… AT&T … Just Saying!
So if you haven’t figured it out I went with the Palm Pre… cautiously at first mind you. I did spend over 2 hours in the store on release day playing with it before I finally agreed to purchase it, and to be honest so far I haven’t been disappointed by anything other than my initial assessment of the phone.
I still feel that the hardware feels like a toy phone, but it is not the first phone I’ve ever had that I said that about. The only other thing so far that really disappointed was the fact that ring tones can’t be assigned to text messaging. Although, it is rumored to being fixed in a software upgrade.
Now to be fair the battery life doesn’t last as long as an Iphone, although unless your continuously using the Wi-Fi that really isn’t an issue, and there is that whole video thing, but really, I own a camera and a flip do I need the video on my phone to? There is also the whole applications debate, for me this is really a mute point. The Iphone will always have more apps, but in reality I am only going to use about 10 or so on a regular basis with either phone. The Pre comes with Tweed, a Twitter client that I fall in love with more and more everyday, Pandora is cool, Fandango as well… the only thing I really wish it had was a Brightkite app since I like to post my pics and such through there. As for the rest of the app catalog… I don’t really care if my phone can cock like a shotgun, make farting noises, or tell me which direction north is. Honestly, if I had the choice of the Pre or the Iphone when lost in the woods I would choose the Pre for it’s cutting ability (for those of you that have seen the cheese video) over a compass any day…
I look at it this way, I don’t have an issue with Sprint’s network where I live, any billing problems I have have been fixed quickly and efficiently, and I qualified for a lot of money off the phone… since I was laid off for 2 weeks, anther very beneficial plus. Now by the time my new contract comes up for renewal, hopefully the Iphone will be on a new network, hopefully it will have a front facing camera, hopefully it will have a even faster processor speed and battery life… and then maybe I’ll switch!
I do like the Iphone but in all honestly the Palm Pre does everything I need it to… and really, that is all that matters!
